People come to the Matapalo area to enjoy the majesty and tranquility of nature. There isn't much nightlife and residents live by natural rhythms, going to bed at nightfall and rising with the sun. If it's a lively party scene you're after, you'll be disappointed. However, if what you want is a rare experience of unspoiled nature, you'll love it. Activities range from mellow (lying in a hammock and listening to the surf) to extreme (waterfall rappelling). We will help you with arranging whatever activities interest you.

Some of the many things to do include:

  • A walk down the coastal jungle dirt road toward Backwash and Matapalo beaches can be a real adventure. Among the wildlife you are likely to see are monkeys, coatis, scarlett macaw, toucans, hawks (and countless other bird species), iguana, iridescent blue morpho butterflies and much more. The rainforest ecosystem is very much intact here and there are exotic species of plants and animals everywhere.

  • Exploring the tide pools in front is great for discovering new life forms. We've been amazed at what we've seen in them!

  • Hiking to one of the gorgeous waterfalls and through the endlessly fascinating rainforest, with or without a guide. Or rappell the falls if you dare!

  • Beach fun! Some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world are right here, including your front yard. Playa Pan Dulce in front is great for swimming. It's only 4-6 feet deep for 200 yards out and the clean, blue water averages 83 degrees year round. Gathering driftwood and shells, or watching the hermit crabs is fun too.

  • Monkey watching. Endlessly entertaining, there are four species of monkey in the area. They often swing through the trees right by the houses, play on the roof or scamper through the yard.

  • Bird watching. This is one of the best places in the world to view hundreds of species, including the rare scarlet macaw.

  • Kayaking - We have kayaks for our guests to use, so you can either surf the waves or explore the shoreline. Everything looks different from the water!

  • Zip lining - Soar through the canopy!

  • Fantastic surfing! Whether you are a beginner or seasoned surfer, this is a world-class surfing destination. Surf lessons take place in the waves in front of our houses; there are surfboard rentals nearby and famous surf breaks are within short walks. They are: Our own Playa Pan Dulce, and its 400 meter rides. Pan Dulce is a perfect peeling point break wave thatís an SUP dream on small days, and still SUP and longboard friendly at double overhead. Nearby Backwash Bay, a 200-meter, reef break, ripping right hander is a 7-minute walk away; and Matapalo Beach, a 100-meter righthander and the thickest wave in the area, is a 20 minute jungle walk from the house.

  • Rainforest tours (including world famous Corcovado National Park).

  • A boat tour of the fabulous Golfo Dulce with whale and dolphin watching.

  • Fishing. This area offers world-class inshore and offshore sport fishing and we know the best outfits. Or fish from the beach in front of our houses. William will show you how.

  • Star gazing. No light pollution makes for an amazing sky. Or look down and see thousands of lightning bugs lighting up the lawn!

  • Check out a nearby swimming hole, where the Carbonera River flows onto the beach. A 15-minute, beautiful low tide walk from the house.

  • Ocean front facial. The creeks feeding onto our beach have natural clay that people swear by for smoother skin.

  • Yoga classes and massage in the midst of the rainforest.

  • Artisan's Market at a nearby restaurant/Bar. Check out the local scene (Dec. - Aug.) at Buena Esperanza Restaurant on Friday evenings when locals sell their wares and delicious dinners are served. Homemade ice cream, rainforest lotions and soaps, jewelry and more are usually there.
